Due to the fast development of renewable energy systems (RESs) and the severe limitations enforced by the marine pollution protocol, the utilization of renewable energy sources (RESs), and energy storage systems (ESSs) in marine vessel power systems have been attracting a lot of attention. The employment of such technologies offers a new way to decrease environmental pollution, increase energy efficiency and improve vessel power system stability. Conversely, a high penetration of RESs can lead to a risk of frequency instability in shipboard microgrids (MGs). Consequently, the application of energy storage systems (ESSs) is one of the best ways to safeguard the power quality and the reliability of ship power systems. Hence, a marine vessel power system with RESs and ESSs can be considered as a specific mobile islanded MG. Firstly, a simple model of the shipboard microgrid will be discussed by the presenter. Secondly, the control problems in islanded MGs will be reviewed and the secondary load frequency control (SLFC) of MGs will be introduced. Finally, the presenter will share briefly his recent research activities related to SLFC analytics, and a field that makes use of advanced intelligent controllers for the SLFC in shipboard microgrids.
